Verona wasn’t our final destination—it was a spontaneous day trip on our journey from Milan to Venice, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our Italy adventure.
Instead of travelling directly to Venice, we decided to spend a day exploring Verona. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we made.
We boarded an early morning train from Milano Centrale and arrived at Verona Porta Nuova with enough time to experience the city’s charm at a relaxed pace.
Since we were travelling onwards to Venice later that evening, we left our luggage at the baggage storage facility inside Verona Porta Nuova Station (we’ve included the cost in the expense sheet at the end of this guide).
From the station, we took a local bus to Arena di Verona, where our self-guided walking tour began.

🏛️ 1. Arena di Verona

Our journey through Verona began at the magnificent Arena di Verona, a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD. Even before stepping inside, its massive stone arches and timeless architecture leave a lasting impression.
Today, the arena hosts world-famous opera performances and concerts, making it one of the few ancient amphitheatres still in active use.
💡 Our Tip: Spend a few minutes walking around the exterior before entering—it offers some of the best photo opportunities.
💕 2. Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta)
🏛️ Located within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Verona
No visit to Verona feels complete without stopping at Juliet’s House, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The famous balcony attracts visitors from around the world, while the courtyard is filled with messages of love and photographs.
Although the balcony itself is relatively small, the atmosphere and history surrounding the site make it worth visiting.

☕ 3. Caffè Borsari
⭐ Our Favourite Breakfast Stop
After exploring Juliet’s House, we headed to Caffè Borsari for a classic Italian breakfast.
Fresh buttery croissants paired with rich Italian espresso made for the perfect start to our day. Sitting outside and watching Verona slowly come to life was one of our favourite moments of the trip.

🌿 4. Piazza delle Erbe

Often considered the heart of Verona, Piazza delle Erbe is surrounded by colourful historic buildings, cafés, market stalls, and elegant architecture.
It’s one of those places where you can simply wander, admire the surroundings, or sit with a coffee and enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
⛪ 5. Basilica di Sant’Anastasia

The largest church in Verona, Basilica di Sant’Anastasia is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes, soaring columns, and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling city outside.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in churches, it’s worth stepping inside to appreciate its impressive interiors.
🌉 6. Ponte Pietra

Crossing Ponte Pietra was one of the highlights of our walk.
This ancient Roman bridge offers stunning views of the Adige River, colourful riverside buildings, and the hills beyond. It’s one of Verona’s most photographed landmarks—and for good reason.

🚠 7. Castel San Pietro Viewpoint
Reached via the Funicular
Instead of climbing hundreds of steps, we chose the funicular to reach Castel San Pietro.
The short ride was enjoyable, but the real reward was the breathtaking panoramic view over Verona’s rooftops, church towers, the Adige River, and the Arena in the distance.
If there’s one viewpoint you shouldn’t miss in Verona, this is it.

⚔️ 8. Scaliger Tombs
🏛️ Located within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Verona
Hidden just a short walk from the city’s main streets, the Scaliger Tombs are beautifully crafted Gothic monuments built for the powerful Scaliger family, who ruled Verona during the Middle Ages.
Although many visitors simply walk past them, they’re one of Verona’s most fascinating historical landmarks.
🗼 9. Torre dei Lamberti
🏛️ Located within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Verona
Standing over 80 metres tall, Torre dei Lamberti offers one of the best panoramic views of Verona.
You can either climb the stairs or take the lift for most of the way before reaching the observation deck.
Looking across Piazza delle Erbe and the red rooftops of Verona from above is well worth the visit.
🏰 10. Porta Borsari

Porta Borsari is an ancient Roman city gate that once served as the main entrance to Verona nearly 2,000 years ago.
Today, it stands as a reminder of the city’s Roman heritage and makes for a great stop before completing the walking loop.

Our walk ended where it began—back at the Arena di Verona.
After spending an entire day wandering through Verona’s streets, crossing historic bridges, enjoying Italian coffee, and discovering centuries of history, we couldn’t help but feel that Verona deserved far more than just a quick stop between Milan and Venice.
If you’re travelling between Milan and Venice, we highly recommend setting aside a day to experience this beautiful city—you’ll be glad you did.
